Hiking in the Morvan Regional Natural Park: Discover the Best Trails

The Morvan Regional Natural Park is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts and eco-tourists. Located in the heart of Burgundy, this park offers a stunning diversity of landscapes, from peaceful lakes and dense forests to rolling hills and lush valleys. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, Morvan has something to satisfy your craving for escape and wild nature. In this article, we present five of the best hikes in the park, starting from our campsite in Étang-sur-Arroux.

1. The Tour of Lac des Settons

Hiking time: 4 hours

Travel time from Étang-sur-Arroux: 45 minutes

Lac des Settons is one of the gems of the Morvan Park. This 15 km hike around the lake offers magnificent views of the tranquil waters and surrounding forests. The trail is well-marked and relatively flat, making it a pleasant walk for the whole family. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of spots to picnic and enjoy the tranquility.

2. Climbing Mont Beuvray

Hiking time: 3 hours

Travel time from Étang-sur-Arroux: 30 minutes

Mont Beuvray, an iconic summit of Morvan, rises to 821 meters and houses the archaeological site of Bibracte. The hike to the summit offers an exceptional panorama of the surrounding hills. The 10 km trail, moderately difficult, takes you through dense forests and sunny clearings. Once at the top, take the time to visit the Bibracte museum for an immersion in Gallic history.

3.The Yonne Sources Circuit

Hiking time: 5 hours

Travel time from Étang-sur-Arroux: 1 hour

This 17 km hike will lead you to the sources of the Yonne, one of the most important rivers in the region. The trail traverses varied landscapes, from flower-filled meadows to deep forests. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque hamlets and remarkable natural sites. It’s a perfect hike for nature lovers and geography enthusiasts.

Hiking time: 4 hours

Travel time from Étang-sur-Arroux: 1 hour 15 minutes

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Vézelay is a must-see. The 12 km loop around this medieval town offers breathtaking views of the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene and the surrounding valleys. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for hikers of all levels. After the hike, take the time to stroll through Vézelay’s picturesque streets and taste the local specialties.

5.The Pierre qui Croule Trail

Hiking time: 3 hours

Travel time from Étang-sur-Arroux: 40 minutes

This 8 km hike will let you discover one of Morvan’s most curious sites: the Pierre qui Croule, a huge granite block in a precarious balance. The trail runs through a dense forest, providing a nice coolness in summer. The course is fairly easy, with a few moderate climbs, and is perfect for a family outing. Don’t miss the many viewpoints over the wooded valleys.

The Camping des 2 Rives in Burgundy remains open all year round. A closed and heated sanitary facility is available. During the off-season, we also welcome students and workers. The campsite’s location allows easy walking access to shops and to our village of Étang-sur-Arroux. This dynamic village offers numerous services such as grocery stores, banks, medical services, pharmacies, and a post office. We are also close to larger cities like Autun and Le Creusot.

Our mobile homes / chalets, with a surface area of 27 or 32 m² (4 or 6 places), are an ideal option for your stay. Depending on the model, they feature 2 or 3 bedrooms (including 1 master bedroom). They are complemented by a semi-open wooden terrace to allow you to enjoy the outdoors and the view of the campsite in Burgundy.

The Tit’Home: a seasonal rental of 20 m² comprising 2 separate bedrooms for 4 or 5 people. This accommodation is fully equipped: a kitchen area with dishes, gas stove, refrigerator, table, and chairs for dining indoors, as well as an outdoor terrace to enjoy the space and the wooded park.

Wooden Mobile Home of 32 m² for a maximum of 6 people. This is a very convenient seasonal accommodation for a family or friends’ stay. The accommodation consists of 3 separate bedrooms and is fully equipped: kitchen, living room, and shaded terrace equipped with garden furniture. Tableware and utensils provided (excluding cleaning products).
